Essential Surgical Skills Workshop
Course Overview
This two-day intensive workshop, led by Dr. Saif Ali Ahmed Al-Sahee, is designed to enhance the core surgical skills of medical professionals, particularly focusing on hands-on techniques essential for surgical practice.
Intended Learning Outcomes:
- Mastery of basic surgical skills such as gowning, gloving, and handling surgical instruments.
- Proficiency in various suturing techniques, including simple, mattress, and subcuticular sutures.
- In-depth understanding and practice of knots, including one-handed reef knots and instrument ties.
- Hands-on training in tissue handling for bowel surgery, wound debridement, and abscess drainage.
- Competence in local anesthetic application, excising skin lesions, and ligation techniques.
- Introduction to vascular and tendon repair, including vein patch exercises and tendon suturing.
- Exposure to endoscopic surgery principles, including camera techniques and laparoscopic skills using box trainers.
Instructor :
Dr. Saif Ali Ahmed Al-Sahee
a highly experienced general surgeon with advanced training in both Iraq and the UK, brings his expertise in laparoscopic hernia repair and other procedures to guide participants through this comprehensive course.
Dr. Saif holds an MRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons, London, and is a certified faculty member for several prestigious surgical courses, including SSSHP, START, and Ccrisp. His teaching is grounded in practical skills and a deep understanding of hernia surgery, offering surgical residents and healthcare professionals’ invaluable mentorship.
Assistants :
Dr. Layth Hasan Bakr
is a dedicated general surgery resident with a medical degree (MBCHB) from Baghdad College of Medicine, class of 2018. Currently in his second year with the Iraqi Board in General Surgery at Al-Imamain al-Kadhumain Medical City, he is also a member of the Iraqi Medical Syndicate. Dr. Layth is certified in both Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), and actively contributes to medical education by delivering lectures on forensic medicine and managing police cases at Al Nahrain College of Medicine.
Dr. Mohammed Nasser (MBCh.B)
is an orthopedic resident doctor with a passion for surgical excellence. A member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MRCS), he has also completed the Basic Surgical Skills course at the Royal College of Ireland. Alongside his clinical duties, Dr. Mohammed contributes to public health initiatives as an instructor at Sumer NGO for Public Health and Sustainable Development.
Dr. Ameer Talib (MBCh.B)
is an orthopedic resident doctor with a strong focus on trauma care and humanitarian work. He is certified in both Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and serves as a speaker for the Iraqi Red Crescent Society. Dr. Ameer is also a member of Doctors Without Borders, furthering his commitment to providing medical aid in challenging environments.
